Thomas Litowinsky, aka ‘tommy lit’ - Captain

A native of the Jersey Shore, Thomas got a job on a fishing boat at age 14 and never left the sea. He fished his way through St. Michael's College and then was commissioned as a Navy officer.

He first stepped aboard a Swan while sailing at the Naval Academy. The Merchant Marine followed for many years until he traded the long voyages and the salt in the spray for the magic that sailing Lake Champlain and Vermont combine to create.

He lives in southern Vermont with his wife amongst Australian Shepherds.

Matt Hughes, aka ‘butterfingers’ — Mate

Born and raised on the scenic shores of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Matt grew up sailing and racing on Long Island Sound. Joining the crew in 2022, he quickly became an invaluable member thanks to his diverse sailing experience and contagious enthusiasm. He is a die-hard sailor and is as comfortable sailing a JY15 as he is behind the wheel of Red or Blue.

Matt's sailing adventures took an exciting turn when he found a free O'Day 17 on Craigslist. Despite its hole, he took on the challenge of repairing it, turning it into a seaworthy vessel once more. His passion for sailing only grew as he recently added a sleek Catalina 27 to his collection. When not on the water, you can find him reading a book, playing tennis, or enjoying time with friends and family.

Gerry Couture aka ‘dad’ — Captain

After sailing on Lake Champlain for the better part of 50 years, Gerry got his captain’s license in 2022. He is a sailboat racer at heart and toes the line every Thursday on his Sabre 34.

Gerry currently holds the record for the most volunteer hours of any of the Sail Vermont team member and loves a good boat project that keeps him moving in any season.

When not sailing you can find him spending time with any of his 8 grandkids, calculating gas mileage, or trying to get anything but crabgrass to grow in the sandy soil of his lawn… oh yeah and he’s my dad!

Jonathan Couture, aka ‘jc, cap, hey you’ — Captain

Jonathan spent 5 years as a live-aboard captain on boats up to 100’ while sailing in the Caribbean and Europe. With 2 Atlantic crossings, and 20,000+ coastal and inland miles racing and cruising, he is perfectly suited to entertain our guests onboard RED and BLUE.

When not on the boat, he spends his time as a professional photographer, contractor, website builder, boat repair specialist, real estate mogul, and amateur tattoo artist (kidding on that last one!).

Daniel McGill, aka ‘dano’ — Captain

Dan is most comfortable on the bow of a boat with his feet in the water dangling off the side. He loves to chase great photos and hates having his picture taken (so I did him a solid on this one),

He is amazingly well read and a wonderful conversationalist and has a passion for sailing that will rival any you’ve ever met!

He is also a brand new boat owner having snagged a wonderful ocean going boat with an eye to hitting the open ocean in the next couple of years (I’ll let him tell you about it!).
